How to play Tangram

Tangram gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Use the example below to understand a decision. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

Focus on one rule

Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Step by step

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Controls

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

A useful example

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Check the stated objective.

Watch out for this

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. Compare the situation with the worked example. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
