How to play Mahjong Solitaire

Read the aim of Mahjong Solitaire, then make your first move. Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Look at what changes after your first action. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Match number-marked tiles in a compact layered layout. The starting arrangement has a complete removal route, but your choices can still block later pairs.

Build a steady rhythm

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Start with a deliberate move.

Step by step

  1. Choose a tile with no covering tile and a free left or right side.
  2. Choose a matching free tile.
  3. Uncover lower layers.
  4. Use hints or undo.

Controls

Tap two free matching tiles. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

A useful example

Equal symbols cannot pair while one is covered. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Read the matching step again.

Watch out for this

Layer and side access matter as well as symbol matching. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
