How to play Futoshiki

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Futoshiki. Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Make your first input carefully and watch the result. Look at what changes after your first action.

Twelve 4×4 puzzles with fixed starter values.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Start with a deliberate move.

Step by step

  1. Select an editable square.
  2. Read inequalities by their row/column coordinates below the board.
  3. Enter 1–4.
  4. Check puzzle verifies both Latin-square rules and inequalities.

Controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

A useful example

r1c2 < r1c3 means row 1 column 2 is smaller than row 1 column 3. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Check the stated objective.

Watch out for this

An inequality specifies order, not an exact difference. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
