How to play Eight-Ball Pool

Take a moment with Eight-Ball Pool before moving to another game. Clear your assigned group, then legally pocket the eight. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Play casual eight-ball with the rules shown here. Called pockets and special tournament break rules are not used.

Read before acting

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Clear your assigned group, then legally pocket the eight. Read that aim before choosing your first action. The example below illustrates a decision.

Step by step

  1. Break the rack.
  2. First legal group pot assigns solids/stripes.
  3. Hit your group first and pocket a ball or contact a rail.
  4. Fouls grant ball in hand.
  5. Play the eight after your group was cleared.

Controls

Touch to aim/place cue ball; set angle and power; Shoot. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

Pocketing eight before clearing your group loses. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Keep the controls nearby.

Watch out for this

No object-ball contact is a foul. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
